What a Senior Developer Costs in Vietnam in 2026: Salary, Overheads, Day Rates

Day rates, gross salary, overheads and replacement risk: the full calculation of what a senior developer hired in Vietnam really costs in 2026.

Local salary, overheads and day rates: what a senior developer in Vietnam really costs in 2026, hired directly, through an agency or as a freelancer.

A senior developer in Vietnam costs between €120 and €250 per day in 2026, two to three times less than an equivalent profile hired in Paris. The real cost, though, depends far less on the headline salary than on the model you pick: direct hire, local agency or independent freelancer.

  • 💰 Vietnam day rates in 2026, a senior developer bills between €120 and €250 per day depending on the model you choose.
  • 📉 The gap with Paris, two to three times cheaper than a Paris-based consultancy, at comparable experience.
  • ⚠️ Salary is only the starting point, overheads, management and replacement all change the real cost.
  • 🤖 AI doesn't break the model, it raises output without removing the need for technical accountability.

This article starts from the gross salary actually paid in Vietnam, adds what a French employer almost always forgets (overheads, management, attrition risk), then compares the three ways of hiring. The goal: you walk away with a figure you can defend in front of a board, not a marketing estimate.

Gross salary for a senior developer in Vietnam in 2026

A Vietnamese senior developer (four years' experience and up) earns, in local gross salary, between $860 and $2,500 a month depending on specialisation and city, according to salary data published by Knok Studios. Senior and lead roles sit towards the top of that range, between $1,600 and $2,500 a month, according to the same outsourcing firm, which operates in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

These figures sit well above the average web developer salary across all experience levels, published at $541 gross by Job and Salary Abroad, a number that blends juniors and mid-level developers and therefore says nothing about the senior market.

Why this salary tells you nothing about the final cost

That number is a starting point, not an answer. A local gross salary covers neither the legal structure needed to employ someone lawfully in Vietnam, nor management time, nor the risk that a key developer walks off the project halfway through. That gap between "salary" and "cost" is exactly what derails the budgets of companies that land on this market unprepared.

What salary hides: overheads, management, replacement

Moving from gross salary to real cost means adding three lines that most online comparisons ignore. The first is regulatory: in Vietnam as in France, gross salary is never what the employer actually pays out.

In France, a senior full-stack developer costs between €60,000 and €85,000 gross per year, on top of which employers pay roughly 45% in social contributions, a rate in line with what INSEE reports for employer social contributions in the private sector. In Vietnam, social contributions weigh significantly less, generally 20 to 24% of gross salary depending on the employee's status, but they exist and they are paid locally.

The second line is management time. Running a team remotely, in a different time zone and a working language that isn't yours, takes real hours from someone in your organisation. The third is replacement: when a senior developer leaves mid-project, the cost isn't just the salary you lose, it's the product slowing down while you find and onboard someone new.

A Vietnamese salary of $1,800 a month that turns into three months of drift the moment someone leaves is not a cheap salary. This is the line I most often see missing from the numbers clients bring me after trying direct hiring first.

Direct hire, agency or freelancer: three very different real costs

Once the local salary is settled, the hiring model you choose radically changes the cost structure, whatever the country. There are three ways to hire a senior developer in Vietnam, and they don't carry the same risk.

Should you hire directly, through an agency, or as a freelancer?

Direct hiring means setting up a local entity, which costs between €5,000 and €10,000 in the first year in registration fees, registered address, legal audit and accounting, based on Knok Studios' detailed breakdown of employer-of-record arrangements in Vietnam. Without an entity, an Employer of Record avoids those fixed costs but adds a monthly fee on top of salary.

Freelancing offers maximum flexibility, but transfers all replacement risk to you: no continuity guarantee, no team to fall back on if the project speeds up, and total dependence on one person's availability. An agency pools that risk: it holds the legal entity, handles replacement and absorbs part of the day-to-day management, in exchange for a margin on the local gross salary.

Full disclosure: I run an offshore development firm in Vietnam, so my view here is not neutral. But it also comes from more than 100 developers placed since 2022 with companies in France, Switzerland and Singapore, not just from a sales pitch. At GoLive Software, the exact rate for a senior profile is never published online: it goes out with the matching CVs, within 48 hours, once the actual need is clear.

One point that often gets underestimated: data security doesn't depend on the model you choose, but on the contractual clauses you negotiate with your provider. I've set out the GDPR guarantees to demand from an offshore team in Vietnam in a dedicated article, if that's what's driving your decision.

Vietnam against the other offshore markets

Vietnam isn't the only way to cut the cost of a senior developer without giving up technical ability. Three other markets come up consistently when my clients weigh their options: Poland, India and French freelancers.

The table below compares 2026 day rates observed in each market, across all models (agency or freelance), for a senior profile with at least five years' experience.

Provider 2026 day rate Monthly cost (20 days) Watch out for
Paris consultancy €500-700 €10,000-14,000 High margin, frequent consultant turnover
Senior freelancer in France €350-550 €7,000-11,000 No guaranteed continuity if they're unavailable
Agency in Poland €300-450 €6,000-9,000 Good time zone fit, cost still high
Agency or freelancer in India €150-300 €3,000-6,000 Cultural gap and highly variable code quality
Agency or freelancer in Vietnam €120-250 €2,400-5,000 GMT+7, small gap with Europe

Why does Vietnam stay cheaper than Poland or India at comparable quality?

Cost of living explains part of the gap with Poland, but not all of it: Vietnam trains more than 50,000 software engineers a year in its universities, according to figures cited by GoLive Software from its own experience on the ground, which keeps the supply of senior profiles plentiful and limits the salary escalation Poland has seen for several years now. Against India, the perceived quality gap comes down mostly to retention: Vietnamese developers look for long engagements, whereas turnover remains a structural problem on the Indian side.

The GMT+7 time zone also makes an operational difference that day-rate tables never show: only five to six hours' difference with Europe, against scheduling clashes that can be far worse with some Indian providers.

Why AI changes the maths without changing the winner

The arrival of tools like Claude Code and Cursor in developers' daily work has revived a fair question: why pay a senior developer if AI writes the code on its own? I think that question starts from the wrong diagnosis.

A non-engineer can generate snippets of code with an AI assistant, but generally can't handle architecture, security, maintenance or the edge cases of a real product. Vibe coding is useful for fast prototyping; it becomes dangerous the moment a product has to hold up in production without serious technical supervision. What AI changes isn't the need for skill, it's how fast real skill turns into shipped features.

On the ground, I see senior developers equipped with Claude Code shipping far faster than two years ago, without architectural or testing rigour suffering for it, at least among the people we select. That's precisely where the Vietnamese advantage strengthens: a senior team that's already technically solid, augmented by AI, produces more per euro spent than an equivalent team that hasn't learned to use it properly yet. I've unpacked this in an article on why AI still doesn't replace a developer, if the subject interests you beyond the cost calculation. The blog ai-first.fr covers in detail how non-technical French SMEs are already running these tools day to day, if you want to dig into the adoption side.

"The future belongs to augmented developers, not replaced ones. AI makes an already solid offshore team even more competitive, it never removes the need for technical accountability."

The verdict: what to take away before you hire

The full calculation gives a 2026 day rate of €120 to €250 for a senior developer in Vietnam, against €500 to €700 for a Paris consultancy at a comparable level. That gap holds comfortably even after adding overheads, management and a provision for replacement, which answers the promise in the title: the real cost stays two to three times lower than an equivalent hire in France.

My concrete advice: never compare a headline gross salary to a French day rate without adding the replacement line. That's the line that turns a budget win into a project derailment. And if what's still holding you back is standing up a full team rather than a single profile, the make-up and budget of a React Native team in Vietnam gives a costed, concrete case to compare against your own.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a senior developer in Vietnam cost per month in 2026?

Local gross salary sits between $1,600 and $2,500 a month for a senior profile, according to Knok Studios. The real cost to a French company, once overheads and management are added, generally works out to a day rate of €120 to €250.

What's the difference between Vietnamese and French day rates?

A senior developer billed on a day rate in Vietnam costs between €120 and €250 per day in 2026, against €500 to €700 for a Paris consultancy. The gap comes from both the local cost of living and a Vietnamese tech job market that's still less stretched than the French one.

Is it better to hire directly or go through an agency in Vietnam?

Direct hiring requires setting up a local entity (€5,000 to €10,000 in the first year) and carrying the replacement risk alone. An agency pools that risk and handles legal compliance, in exchange for a margin built into the day rate you're billed.

Does AI reduce the real cost of a senior developer?

AI doesn't reduce a senior developer's salary, but it raises their output within the same billed day. A senior developer equipped with tools like Claude Code ships more features per euro spent, provided technical supervision stays in place on architecture and edge cases.

How long does it take to hire a senior developer in Vietnam?

Through an established agency, CVs of matching profiles generally arrive within 48 hours and the engagement effectively starts in under seven working days. Hiring directly without a local entity, allow several extra weeks for the administrative side.
